A LOOK AT TODAY: SATURDAY, MARCH 11 Tournaments in action today: Other Tournaments resuming tomorrow: Regular Season Champion: Albany Today's Schedule - Championship (Higher Seed): Eliminated: (2) Binghamton, (3) Boston U., (4) Hartford, (5) New Hampshire, (7) Maine, (8) UMBC, (9) Stony Brooks NCAA Implications: Just one America East squad will be dancing in March. Regular season champion Albany and runner-up Binghamton, who finished just one game behind the Great Danes and is hosting the first three rounds of the tournament, are the favorites. No other team in the conference won more than nine league games. Bracket Regular Season Champion: Duke Today's Schedule - Semifinals (Greensboro, NC): Eliminated: (5) Florida State, (9) Clemson, (10) Virginia Tech, (11) Virginia Tech NCAA Implications: Duke, North Carolina, Boston College, and NC State have all locked up NCAA bids. Florida State improved their status with a 2-0 end to the regular season but must win at least one - and probably more - ACC Tourney games if they wish to go dancing. Maryland must also avoid an early exit from Greensboro to stay in the conversation. Clemson, Virginia, and Miami each went 7-9 in league play and will need to get at least to the title game before moving onto the bubble. Bracket Regular Season Champion: George Washington Today's Schedule - Championship (Cincinnati, OH): Eliminated: (1) George Washington, (2) Charlotte, (3) LaSalle, (4) St. Louis, (7) Massachusetts, (8) Rhode Island, (11) Richmond, (12) Dayton NCAA Implications: George Washington destroyed the competition in the A-10 this season on their way to a 16-0 conference record. The Colonials are the clear-cut favorite to win the league tourney and are looking to improve their seed with every win. Though Charlotte, LaSalle, and St. Louis all won ten or more conference games, none of those teams will be in the running for a NCAA bid unless they win the tournament. Bracket Regular Season Co-Champions: Connecticut / Villanova Today's Schedule - Championship (New York City, NY): Eliminated: (1) Connecticut, (3) West Virginia, (4) Marquette, (7) Seton Hall, (8) Cincinnati, (10) Rutgers, (11) Louisville, (12) Notre Dame NCAA Implications: Six Big East teams - Connecticut, Villanova, West Virginia, Pittsburgh, Georgetown, and Marquette - head into the league tournament as NCAA locks. Cincinnati, Seton Hall, and Syracuse are each on the bubble, though it appears the Bearcats and Pirates have much better dancing chances than does the Orange. How that trio of teams plays this week in NYC will have a huge impact on their bubble status come Selection Sunday. Bracket Regular Season Champion: Ohio State Today's Schedule - Semifinals (Indianapolis, IN): Eliminated: (7) Michigan, (9) Northwestern, (11) Purdue NCAA Implications: Ohio State, Illinois, Iowa, Wisconsin, and Michigan State are all NCAA locks. Michigan is probably in as well, though the Wolves would very much like to avoid a first round loss in Indianapolis. Indiana improved their stock with a win at UM last weekend to finish 9-7 in league play, and if the Hoosiers can win a game or two this week, they'll likely make the Dance as well. No other Big Ten team will be dancing this spring unless they win the league tourney. Bracket Regular Season Co-Champions: Kansas / Texas Today's Schedule - Semifinals (Dallas, TX): Eliminated: (9) Texas Tech, (10) Iowa State, (11) Missouri, (12) Baylor NCAA Implications: Kansas, Texas, and Oklahoma are the only Big XII teams that are NCAA locks heading into the week. Texas A&M, the only other conference team to win 10 league games, is looking good right now but must avoid an early exit from Dallas to keep their hopes alive. Colorado limped to the finish in the regular season and likely needs at least two wins in the conference tourney to earn serious bubble consideration. Bracket Regular Season Champion: Pacific Today's Schedule - Championship (Anaheim, CA): Eliminated: (5) UC-Santa Barbara, (6) CS-Fullerton, (7) CS-Northridge, (8) UC-Riverside NCAA Implications: Just one Big West team will be dancing this spring, and Pacific is the favorite to earn that single bid. The Tigers won 12 league games and captured the regular season title by two games. UC-Irvine and Long Beach State were the only other Big West teams to finish with winning conference records. Bracket Regular Season Champion: Memphis Today's Schedule - Championship (Memphis, TN): Eliminated: (5) UCF, (6) Tulsa, (7) Rice, (8) Tulane, (9) Marshall, (10) SMU, (11) Southern Miss, (12) East Carolina NCAA Implications: The Memphis Tigers won the regular season title and are hoping for a #1 seed when the NCAA field is announced on Sunday. UM's lone league loss came to UAB last week, and with that win, the Blazers feel they have moved off the bubble and into the dance. A quick exit out of Memphis could cause concern in Birmingham, however. UTEP and Houston have had quality seasons as well, but neither will go to the Big Dance unless they win the CUSA Tournament. Bracket Regular Season Champion: Kent State Today's Schedule - Championship (Cleveland, OH): Eliminated: (2) Northern Illinois, (4) Miami-OH, (6) Western Michigan, (8) Buffalo, (9) Ball State, (10) Bowling Green, (11) Eastern Michigan, (12) Central Michigan NCAA Implications: Kent State is the slight favorite to capture the MAC's one NCAA bid this spring, though Akron and Miami (Ohio) are very much in the running as well. In fact, the Zips beat the Flashes by eight just this past weekend. This tournament is as wide open as any other, as no less than seven league teams won 10 or more conference games this season. Bracket Regular Season Champion: Delaware State Today's Schedule - Championship (Raleigh, NC): Eliminated: (2) Coppin State, (3) Bethune-Cookman, (5) Florida A&M, (8) North Carolina A&T, (9) Howard, (10) MD-Eastern Shore, (11) Morgan State NCAA Implications: Just one MEAC team will earn a berth into the NCAA Tournament, and Delaware State is the clear-cut favorite to claim that spot. The Hornets won sixteen league games this season and captured the regular season title by four games. A half-dozen other squads won between ten and twelve conference games, and any could make a late push to go dancing. Bracket Regular Season Champion: San Diego State Today's Schedule - Championship (Denver, CO): Eliminated: (2) Air Force, (3) BYU, (5) New Mexico, (8) Colorado State, (9) TCU NCAA Implications: San Diego State won the regular season title but is unlikely to earn a NCAA bid unless they win the MWC Tourney. Air Force, meanwhile, finished a game behind the Aztecs in the standings but is on the bubble for a Big Dance berth. If the Falcons can win the tournament in Denver this week, they would likely be the lone Mountain West team dancing this spring. BYU has also gotten a few looks but likely will be NIT-bound without a tournamnet championship this week. Bracket Regular Season Champion: UCLA Today's Schedule - Semifinals (Los Angeles, CA): Eliminated: (2) Washington, (5) Stanford, (6) Southern Cal, (8) Arizona State, (9) Oregon State, (10) Washington State NCAA Implications: UCLA and Washington are NCAA locks, and each is looking to improve its seed while in LA this week. Arizona looks like a lock as well, but the Wildcats could use a good run in the league tourney to improve their seeding too. California has slipped onto the bubble in recent weeks and must avoid a quick exit to stay in the race. A good performance by the Bears this week could push them into next week's Big Dance. Stanford fared well against PAC 10 competition this season, but it would take a run into at least the tournament title game for the Cardinal to earn even a little NCAA consideration. Bracket Regular Season Champion: LSU Today's Schedule - Semifinals (Nashville, TN): Eliminated: (W4) Mississippi State, (W5) Auburn, (E6) Georgia, (W6) Mississippi NCAA Implications: LSU, Tennessee, and Florida are clearly NCAA locks, while Alabama, Arkansas, and Kentucky are very likely in as well. Any of those latter three might sweat a bit until Sunday if they drop out after just one game, but each's NCAA hopes still look extremely solid. Most experts expect the SEC to send six teams dancing. Vanderbilt is the only other team in the conference even considered to be on the bubble, and the 'Dores would need to win at least two - and probably more - games to move themselves back into consideration. Bracket Regular Season Champion: Southern Today's Schedule - Championship (Birmingham, AL): Eliminated: (2) Alabama A&M, (4) Alabama State, (6) Mississippi Valley State, (8) Alcorn State NCAA Implications: Just one SWAC team will be dancing this season. Southern is the clear-cut favorite, while four other teams won 10 or 11 league games and could sneak up to make a run. Bracket Regular Season Champion: Nevada Today's Schedule - Championship (Reno, NV): Eliminated: (4) Hawaii, (6) Boise State, (7) San Jose State, (8) Idaho NCAA Implications: Regular season champion Nevada looks like a NCAA lock, while runner-up Utah State is on the bubble. The Aggies will need to go at least as far as the tournament title game to have an at-large chance and may actually need to win the tourney. Along with UN and USU, Louisiana Tech, Hawaii, and New Mexico State all won 10 or more league games and could make a run this week. Bracket |
