BIG XII CHAOS COMMENCING - WHO DESERVES A SHOT?
November 24, 2008

SCS.comOf course Texas Tech lost to Oklahoma. There was no doubt in my mind. After two weeks of picking against the Red Raiders, I gave them my vote of confidence. I picked them to get the win against Oklahoma on the road. The game was not even close. The score was 42-7...at halftime! The final was 65-21, a beat-down of epic proportions. Oklahoma solidified itself as one of the best teams in the nation. They ran for 300 yards and threw for 326 yards. Texas Tech, on the other hand, has virtually no shot of making it to the Big 12 title game and a BCS bowl is not likely. This loss definitely puts a damper on a fantastic season.

Oklahoma, Texas, and Texas Tech all play one more game. Texas plays Texas A&M on Thursday, a game that should never be close. Texas Tech plays Baylor. Unless Tech just gives up on their season after this loss, they should roll the Bears. Oklahoma has the toughest task. They play rival Oklahoma State in Stillwater. I will break down the chances for each team so their fans have something to hope for on Saturday.

Oklahoma - Win big and hope for a Texas loss, who has beaten you head-to-head. Texas - Win big and you ‘should’ be chosen for the Big 12 title game. Texas Tech - Win big and hope for an Oklahoma loss. Since you beat Texas, you win the head-to-head.

Confused? Me too. If we had a playoff, this would all be taken care of. However, President Bush is still in office and Barack Obama does not have the power to throw his weight around, yet. How sad is it that may Americans want the President-elect to accomplish one thing. Get a playoff system for college football.

Moving to the 2nd best conference in college football, the SEC, Alabama and Florida are locks for the SEC title game. However, both will be tested this upcoming week as a tune-up. I refuse to believe that in the crazy world of college football that both Alabama and Florida come out winners this upcoming weekend. Florida State is playing great football and will be ready to test the Gators. Alabama plays rival Auburn in the Iron Bowl. Auburn needs the win to become bowl eligible. Their defense is strong, but their offense lacks firepower. Alabama is not overlooking the Iron Bowl, but I think they struggle, at the least.

Hits:

  • Oregon State beat a solid Arizona team on the road to move one step closer to a Rose bowl berth. A last second field goal gave the Beavers the win. With a win over rival Oregon, OSU will spoil many BCS dreams for at-large contenders (Boise State, Ohio State).

  • Speaking of playing spoiler, Utah walloped BYU 48-24 to secure a BCS berth.

  • No drama in the Big 10. Ohio State drilled rival Michigan 42-7. It was great to see senior Todd Boeckman get in the game and throw a touchdown. Ohio State is hoping for an Oregon State loss, opening up a BCS bowl bid. Penn State, on the other hand, has already locked up a trip to the Rose Bowl. They dominated Michigan State 48-19.

  • The best game of the day had the two worst BCS teams pitted against each other. Washington State won the apple cup in overtime 16-13. Washington State had to make a field goal as time-expired to force overtime.

  • Cincinnati needs to beat Syracuse this upcoming weekend to lock up a BCS bowl bid. The likely Big East champs have played several quarterbacks consistently throughout the year, but Tony Pike looks like the best of the bunch. He was 26-32 for 309 yards and three touchdowns.

    Misses:

  • Notre Dame lost to Syracuse at home 24-23. They won the turnover battle and got a good day from quarterback Jimmy Clausen, but they were outscored 14-0 in the 4th quarter. Charlie Weis’s days are numbered.

  • North Carolina blew its chance at a BCS bowl with a devastating 41-10 home loss to North Carolina State. Thank goodness for basketball season.

  • Did I see that box score correctly? Wisconsin was taken into overtime by Cal-Poly at home? Luckily for Wisconsin, missed extra-points allowed them to sneak out an underserved win.

  • LSU is really having a down year, and their 31-13 loss to Mississippi proves it. Mississippi is not chopped liver, but they should not be blowing LSU out at home. LSU does not deserved to be ranked.

  • Nobody in the ACC has a conference record better than 5-3. What is even worse is that the two teams that are 5-3 do not control their own destiny this upcoming weekend. Florida State and Georgia Tech play rivalry games (Florida and Georgia), while Boston College and Virginia Tech can clinch spots in the title game with wins over Maryland and Virginia.
