TEAM PREVIEWS
BOISE STATE
Last Season: 11-1 / 8-0
Starters Returning: 8 offense, 8 defense
Projected wins: at HAW, PORTST, SJSU, at USU, NEV, NMSU, Idaho
Projected losses: at GA
Toss-Ups: at ORST, BGSU, at Fresno, at LT
PROJECTED RECORD: 9-3 / 7-1
BOTTOM LINE: Clearly the league's best team a year ago, the Broncos could fill that role again in 2005. This year's schedule is tougher, however, meaning the overall record will suffer.
FRESNO STATE
Last Season: 9-3 / 5-3
Starters Returning: 9 offense, 7 defense
Projected wins: Weber, at NMSU, USU, at Idaho, at HAW, SJSU, LT
Projected losses: at USC
Toss-Ups: at OR, Toledo, Boise, at NEV
PROJECTED RECORD: 9-3 / 7-1
BOTTOM LINE: The Bulldogs are the WAC's second and only other elite squad and could match BSU in terms of league wins. The tailback duo of Sumlin and Mathis is as good as anyone else's nationwide.
NEVADA
Last Season: 5-7 / 3-5
Starters Returning: 6 offense, 7 defense
Projected wins: UNLV, at SJSU, Idaho, LT, HAW, at USU
Projected losses: at Boise, Fresno
Toss-Ups: WSU, at CSU, at NMSU
PROJECTED RECORD: 7-4 / 5-3
BOTTOM LINE: The drop from second to third in the WAC is large, to say the least. Thirteen Wolfpack starters return from last year's team to take on a schedule that should lend itself to at least six wins.
LOUISIANA TECH
Last Season: 6-6 / 5-3
Starters Returning: 5 offense, 4 defense
Projected wins: SJSU, at USU, at Idaho
Projected losses: at FLA, at KU, NTX, Boise, at Fresno
Toss-Ups: NMSU, HAW, at NEV
PROJECTED RECORD: 5-6 / 5-3
BOTTOM LINE: The Bulldogs got to six wins a year ago, but RB Ryan Moats, as well as a dozen other starters, must be replaced. Another six-win season would be impressive.
HAWAII
Last Season: 8-5 / 4-4
Starters Returning: 4 offense, 6 defense
Projected wins: at Idaho, at SJSU, USU, SDSU
Projected losses: USC, at MICHST, Boise, Fresno, WISC
Toss-Ups: at LT, NMSU, at NEV
PROJECTED RECORD: 5-7 / 4-4
BOTTOM LINE: With Timmy Chang's college eligibility now expired, where will the Warriors turn? Even with Chang at the helm, UH was never unbeatable. Look for that to show this fall.
NEW MEXICO STATE
Last Season: 5-6 / 4-3
Starters Returning: 7 offense, 6 defense
Projected wins: Idaho, at SJSU, USU
Projected losses: UTEP, at COLO, at NM, CAL, Fresno, at Boise
Toss-Ups: at LT, at HAW, NEV
PROJECTED RECORD: 4-8 / 4-4
BOTTOM LINE: This squad went .500-plus in the Sun Belt last year, and with thirteen starters back, there are hopes for a good WAC debut. The schedule does the Aggies no favors, however.
SAN JOSE STATE
Last Season: 2-9 / 1-7
Starters Returning: 6 offense, 7 defense
Projected wins: EWA, Idaho
Projected losses: at ILL, at Boise, at LT, at Fresno
Toss-Ups: at SDSU, NEV, at USU, HAW, NMSU
PROJECTED RECORD: 4-7 / 2-6
BOTTOM LINE: The Spartans are likely to improve their record this fall, but it's not necessarily because the team is any better. New head coach Dick Tomey has a long process ahead of him.
UTAH STATE
Last Season: 3-8 / 2-5
Starters Returning: 4 offense, 6 defense
Projected wins: NICHST
Projected losses: at Utah, at Fresno, Boise, at ALA, at HAW, NEV, at NMSU
Toss-Ups: UNLV, at Idaho, SJSU, LT
PROJECTED RECORD: 2-10 / 1-7
BOTTOM LINE: The Aggies will struggle for wins again in 2005. The brighest spot on the team is WR / special teams demon Kevin Robinson, who was second nationally in punt returns a year ago.
IDAHO
Last Season: 3-9 / 2-5
Starters Returning: 9 offense, 7 defense
Projected wins: (none)
Projected losses: at WSU, at WA, HAW, at NEV, Fresno, at NMSU, at Boise
Toss-Ups: at UNLV, USU, LT, at SJSU
PROJECTED RECORD: 1-10 / 1-7
BOTTOM LINE: The Vandals return an impressive sixteen starters from last year's club but still face a daunting task in 2005. Matching 2004's win total will be a tough task.
