TEAM PREVIEWS

SCS.com SOUTHERN CAL
Last Season: 13-0 / 8-0
Starters Returning: 8 offense, 5 defense
Projected wins: at HAW, ARK, AZ, at WA, WSU, STAN, at CAL, Fresno
Projected losses: (none)
Toss-Ups: at OR, at ASU, at ND, UCLA
PROJECTED RECORD: 12-0 / 8-0
BOTTOM LINE: Last year's co-national champs have many of the key components returning. Back-to-back road trips to Oregon and Arizona State could trip up the Trojans. Can they go unbeaten twice in a row?

SCS.com ARIZONA STATE
Last Season: 9-3 / 5-3
Starters Returning: 9 offense, 6 defense
Projected wins: TEMP, NW, at STAN, WA, AZ
Projected losses: USC
Toss-Ups: at LSU, at OSU, OR, at WSU, at UCLA
PROJECTED RECORD: 8-3 / 6-2
BOTTOM LINE: Somewhat overlooked, this team picked up a huge momentum swing with a thrilling bowl win over Purdue last winter. QB Sam Keller proved he can lead this team and has one of the country's best WRs.

SCS.com CALIFORNIA
Last Season: 10-2 / 7-1
Starters Returning: 6 offense, 3 defense
Projected wins: SACST, at WA, ILL, at NMSU, AZ, at Stan
Projected losses: at UCLA, USC
Toss-Ups: OSU, WSU, at OR
PROJECTED RECORD: 8-3 / 5-3
BOTTOM LINE: I don't have much confidence that Cal will be all that great in '05, but the schedule sets the Bears up for a good record. Six wins should come with ease, and three of the other five games are at home.

SCS.com OREGON
Last Season: 5-6 / 4-4
Starters Returning: 7 offense, 6 defense
Projected wins: HOU, MONT, Fresno, at STAN, WA, at AZ, CAL
Projected losses: USC, at ASU
Toss-Ups: at WSU, OSU
PROJECTED RECORD: 8-3 / 5-3
BOTTOM LINE: The Ducks, like Cal, are the beneficiary of a good schedule. The team won just five games a year ago but has the talent to win almost twice that many. Seven wins should not be a problem.

SCS.com UCLA
Last Season: 6-6 / 4-4
Starters Returning: 7 offense, 8 defense
Projected wins: at SDSU, Rice, WA, CAL, OSU, at STAN, at AZ
Projected losses: OK, at USC
Toss-Ups: at WSU, ASU
PROJECTED RECORD: 7-4 / 5-3
BOTTOM LINE: If the Bruins had Cal's schedule, they would win nine games this fall. Fifteen starters are back from a team that lost six games in 2004, four of those by less than a touchdown. OU game at home will tell a lot.

SCS.com OREGON STATE
Last Season: 7-5 / 5-3
Starters Returning: 7 offense, 6 defense
Projected wins: PORTST, AZ, at WA, STAN
Projected losses: at LOU, ASU, at UCLA
Toss-Ups: Boise, WSU, at CAL, at OR
PROJECTED RECORD: 6-5 / 4-4
BOTTOM LINE: Record-setting QB Derek Anderson is gone, but two of his favorite targets, WR Mike Hass and TE Joe Newton, are still in Corvallis. Six members of one of the PAC10's best defenses are back; QB must produce.

SCS.com WASHINGTON STATE
Last Season: 5-6 / 3-5
Starters Returning: 9 offense, 6 defense
Projected wins: Idaho, at NEV, GSU, STAN, at WA
Projected losses: at USC, ASU
Toss-Ups: at OSU, UCLA, at CAL, OR
PROJECTED RECORD: 6-5 / 3-5
BOTTOM LINE: The Cougars return nine offensive starters but won just five games a year ago. The schedule offers a chance at success; home games against teams like Arizona State, UCLA, and Oregon will decide WSU's fate.

SCS.com WASHINGTON
Last Season: 1-10 / 0-8
Starters Returning: 7 offense, 9 defense
Projected wins: AF, Idaho
Projected losses: ND, at UCLA, at OR, USC, at ASU
Toss-Ups: CAL, OSU, at AZ, WSU
PROJECTED RECORD: 4-7 / 2-6
BOTTOM LINE: The Huskies had a horrendous '04 season and consequently have a new man in charge for 2005. Ty Willingham has provided a new spark, but that won't matter if the -19 turnover margin doesn't improve.

SCS.com ARIZONA
Last Season: 3-8 / 2-6
Starters Returning: 6 offense, 9 defense
Projected wins: NAZ, STAN, WA
Projected losses: at Utah, PUR, at CAL, at USC, at OSU, UCLA, at ASU
Toss-Ups: OR
PROJECTED RECORD: 3-8 / 2-6
BOTTOM LINE: Coach Mike Stoops won just three games a year ago, but the team got a huge boost with a season-ending victory over rival Arizona State. The offense must be more efficient to complement a decent defense.

SCS.com STANFORD
Last Season: 4-7 / 2-6
Starters Returning: 10 offense, 5 defense
Projected wins: UC-Davis
Projected losses: OR, at WSU, at AZ, ASU, UCLA, at USC, at OSU, CAL, ND
Toss-Ups: at Navy
PROJECTED RECORD: 1-10 / 0-8
BOTTOM LINE: Coach Walt Harris had a large amount of success at Pittsburgh, but winning at Stanford won't be that easy. Ten offensive starters return, but that unit was ranked just 92nd nationally a year ago.
