TEAM PREVIEWS
NEW MEXICO
Last Season: 7-5 / 5-2
Starters Returning: 9 offense, 6 defense
Projected wins: UNLV, NMSU, BYU, at SDSU, CSU, AF
Projected losses: (none)
Toss-Ups: at MO, at UTEP, at TCU, at WYO, at Utah
PROJECTED RECORD: 9-2 / 7-1
BOTTOM LINE: RB DonTrell Moore, one of the nation's top backs, is one of nine offensive starters returning from a year ago. Every game on the schedule is winnable.
UTAH
Last Season: 12-0 / 7-0
Starters Returning: 6 offense, 5 defense
Projected wins: USU, AF, at CSU, SDSU, at UNLV
Projected losses: (none)
Toss-Ups: AZ, at TCU, at NC, WYO, NM, at BYU
PROJECTED RECORD: 8-3 / 6-2
BOTTOM LINE: Many of the main ingredients from last year's 12-0 squad are gone, including coach Urban Meyer. But this is still a good team, and new coach Kyle Whittingham should keep them in the title hunt.
WYOMING
Last Season: 7-5 / 3-4
Starters Returning: 9 offense, 8 defense
Projected wins: ULM, at AF, UNLV, TCU, BYU, at SDSU
Projected losses: at FLA
Toss-Ups: at MISS, NM, at Utah, at CSU
PROJECTED RECORD: 7-4 / 6-2
BOTTOM LINE: The Cowboys are have an impressive 17 starters returning, including all-conference wideout Jovon Bouknight. If QB Casey Bramlet cuts down on the INTs, this team could make some noise.
BYU
Last Season: 5-6 / 4-3
Starters Returning: 7 offense, 6 defense
Projected wins: EIU, at SDSU, AF, at UNLV
Projected losses: at NM, at ND, at WYO, Utah
Toss-Ups: BC, TCU, CSU
PROJECTED RECORD: 6-5 / 5-3
BOTTOM LINE: The Cougars haven't been to a bowl since 2001, but things are looking better. New head coach Bronco Mendenhall has the league's best QB and one of the top WRs.
TCU
Last Season: 5-6 / 3-5
Starters Returning: 6 offense, 7 defense
Projected wins: at SMU, Army, at SDSU, UNLV
Projected losses: at OK, NM, at WYO
Toss-Ups: Utah, at BYU, at AF, CSU
PROJECTED RECORD: 6-5 / 4-4
BOTTOM LINE: The Frogs had a disappointing CUSA finale. With the running game in the good hands of Lonta Hobbs and Robert Merrill, the key to this year's team is the health of QB Tye Gunn.
COLORADO STATE
Last Season: 4-7 / 3-4
Starters Returning: 9 offense, 8 defense
Projected wins: NEV, AF, SDSU, at UNLV
Projected losses: at COLO, at MINN, at NM
Toss-Ups: Utah, at BYU, WYO, at TCU
PROJECTED RECORD: 5-6 / 4-4
BOTTOM LINE: The Rams failed to finish .500 in league play last fall but return 17 starters. WR David Anderson had nearly 1,000 yards a year ago and must step up again in 2005.
AIR FORCE
Last Season: 5-6 / 3-4
Starters Returning: 7 offense, 5 defense
Projected wins: SDSU, UNLV, Army
Projected losses: WA, WYO, at Utah, at CSU, at BYU, at NM
Toss-Ups: at Navy, TCU
PROJECTED RECORD: 4-7 / 3-5
BOTTOM LINE: The Falcons threw the ball more than usual in 2004, but it still led to a sub-.500 record. QB Shaun Carney showed flashes of greatness last year and will be interesting to watch in 2005.
SAN DIEGO STATE
Last Season: 4-7 / 2-5
Starters Returning: 9 offense, 4 defense
Projected wins: (none)
Projected losses: UCLA, at AF, at OHST, BYU, at Utah, NM, at CSU, WYO, at HAW
Toss-Ups: SJSU, at UNLV, TCU
PROJECTED RECORD: 2-9 / 1-7
BOTTOM LINE: The Aztecs have nine starters back on offense, but they won just two league games a year ago. RB Lynell Hamilton, who rushed for more than 1,000 yards in 2003, is back after sitting out 2004 due to injury.
UNLV
Last Season: 2-9 / 1-6
Starters Returning: 5 offense, 3 defense
Projected wins: (none)
Projected losses: at NM, at WYO, at AF, Utah, BYU, at TCU, CSU
Toss-Ups: Idaho, at NEV, at USU, SDSU
PROJECTED RECORD: 2-9 / 0-8
BOTTOM LINE: The Rebels will be led by a new man this fall, first-year head coach Mike Sanford. Winning four games will be a challenge but is a goal to shoot for in 2005.
