This week's college hoops slate seems to offer a smaller number of intriguing matchups than usual, but perhaps that is just a warning to the NCAA basketball nation of what's to come in the weeks ahead. Among the next few days' top games is a huge Big East contest featuring West Virginia and Georgetown, both of whom are coming off monstrous weekend wins. Also on Monday, Oklahoma State and Texas meet again just a few short weeks after their three-OT thriller in Stillwater. Other must-see battles this week include Virginia Tech-North Carolina and Duke-Boston College in the ACC and USC-Arizona out west. Here's a complete look at the coming days! MUST-SEE GAMES West Virginia at Georgetown Both squads picked up huge wins over the weekend, the Hoyas prevailing at home over Marquette while the Mountaineers took down UCLA. Georgetown heads into the week just a game back of Pittsburgh in the Big East standings, while WVU is a very solid 19-5 and staring a very good NCAA seed right in the face. Oklahoma State at Texas It's part II of this series for 2007, and if this round is anywhere near as good as the first, hoops fans will be in for a treat. Both teams have dropped games recently, though, each losing in two of their last three outings, and both of course would love to get things back on track right now. Virginia Tech at North Carolina The Hokies were dominating in a run-away victory over in-state rival Virginia on Saturday, and with that win, they're now just one game out of first place in the ACC standings. Leading the way, though, are these Tar Heels who are just a half-game behind BC atop the leaderboard. Duke at Boston College The Eagles, as mentioned, are leading the way in the ACC, and a win like this would be huge to add to the resume, even if Coach K's squad has dropped four games in a row. You have to think that the Devils will eventually get things back on track, so BC better bring their A-game. Southern Cal at Arizona The Wildcats suddenly seem to have things back together again after a small, mid-season crisis. They've won 3 in a row, including getting a big one on the road at Oregon on Saturday. USC, meanwhile, is just two games out of first place in the Pac-10 heading into the week and could stay right in the race with a win in Tucson. OTHER TOP MATCHUPS MONDAY Louisville at Pittsburgh - 6:00 PM CST League-leading Panthers welcome in a Cardinals squad fighting for their NCAA lives. Santa Clara at Gonzaga - 11:00 PM CST The Gaels suddenly find themselves tied with Gonzaga atop the WCC standings. Zags are also now dealing with off-the-court distractions. TUESDAY Kentucky at Tennessee - 6:00 PM CST 'Cats nearly took down Florida on Saturday, while Tennessee looked good in dismantling Vandy. Hofstra at Old Dominion - 6:00 PM CST Both teams find themselves one game back of VCU, so the loser here may be out of the Colonial race. Texas Tech at Texas A&M - 6:00 PM CST Red Raiders need to right the ship quickly, or their NCAA hopes could be history. Oklahoma at Iowa State - 7:00 PM CST Sooners have themselves in good position but need to cash in this opportunity. Kansas State at Nebraska - 7:00 PM CST Good chance for Bob Huggins' team to get a quality road win. Georgia Tech at Florida State - 7:00 PM CST Both are under .500 in league play and desperately need this win. Southern Illinois at Missouri State - 7:05 PM CST Salukis are now along atop the MVC, but M-State is one of only three league teams with 10 conference wins. Michigan at Michigan State - 8:00 PM CST The loser here could very well hang up their NCAA hopes before the week is complete. Northern Iowa at Creighton - 8:05 PM CST Panthers are now a game below .500 in the MVC, while Creighton is sitting in second place. WEDNESDAY Maryland at NC State - 6:00 PM CST Terps are riding high after a win over Duke but need to get the job done on the road to stay in the NCAA hunt. Indiana at Purdue - 6:00 PM CST Huge, huge game for the Boilers as they could get back to .500 in the Big Ten with a big rivalry win. LSU at Mississippi - 7:00 PM CST Rebels are tied atop the SEC West heading into the week and could be leading the way with a win here. Arkansas at Mississippi State - 7:00 PM CST Both are at 4-6 in the SEC and still hoping for a shot to get to 8 league wins. Alabama at Florida - 7:00 PM CST Gators continue to run over everything in their way to an SEC title. Marquette at DePaul - 7:30 PM CST Demons took down Notre Dame on their home court last week, now try their luck against the Eagles. Washington State at Washington - 9:00 PM CST Huskies seem to have found themselves again. WSU, meanwhile, is just a half-game out of first place. Long Beach State at Cal State-Fullerton - 9:05 PM CST These two are the front-runners to take home the Big West title. THURSDAY Providence at Notre Dame - 6:00 PM CST The winner here heads into the weekend above .500 in Big East play. Oregon at California - 9:30 PM CST Ducks have faltered in recent weeks, but this is a game they should win. |
