A WEEKEND LOOK INSIDE ACC BASEBALL
March 16, 2007

SCS.com The SEC is often thought of as the best conference in college baseball. This year the ACC has four teams in the top 10, and the SEC has three. North Carolina, Clemson, Virginia, and Florida State are all threats to make it to Omaha. This very well could be the best year in the ACC yet.

This weekend is the opening weekend in the ACC, and two of the fab four teams are going head to head. The Cavaliers of Virginia travel to Chapel Hill to take on the Tar Heels, while Wake Forest goes to Florida State and Clemson hosts Duke. This weekend will likely knock one of the fab four out of the top 10. Who will it be?

#9 Virginia @ #2 North Carolina

This could be one of the best series in the ACC this year. UNC has established themselves as a bonafide player in college baseball. Their run to the College World Series was impressive last year. UVA has a new ballpark and new list of priorities for their program.

North Carolina is off to a 17-1 start this year, and Coach Mike Fox has this program headed in the right direction. Alex White and Robert Woodard have been very tough on the mound this year. UVA is solid, but I give the edge to the Tar Heels at Boshamer.

Prediction: UNC wins series 2-1

Wake Forest @ #6 Florida State

Coach Mike Martin has his Seminoles back in the top 10. So far in 2007 the Noles are 20-0. Look for them to stay unbeaten this weekend. Wake Forest is coming into Dick Howser Stadium, and I do not see them stealing one from FSU.

Tony Thomas is hitting over .500, and there are four other Noles hitting over .400. Last weekend the Noles hosted Tennessee and beat them a combined 32-9 in the three-game sweep. This is Martin's best team in years. Look for FSU to be on top of the ACC towards the end of the year.

Prediction: FSU sweeps the series

Duke @ #8 Clemson

Clemson was a preseason #1 in many circles. The Tigers have played a tough schedule, and they have played a lot of guys. Their record is not stellar, but they have built some depth in the pre-conference season.

The starting pitching staff has a good ERA, but has been rocky at times this year. Steven Clyne is 3-0 with a 0.00 ERA, but that is all out of the pen. The Tigers have hit a good number of homers, but have stuggles with getting men in scoring position. Clemson will come around in time, they will get healthy this weekend.

Prediction: Clemson sweeps series

Elsewhere in the ACC

Virginia Tech @ NC State
Boston College @ #22 Georgia Tech
Maryland @ #25 Miami

U.S.A.
