The SEC has long been known as the power conference in college baseball. The SEC has always been the bully, the envied conference, and the conference is strong once again. Vanderbilt, Arkansas, and South Carolina are all top 10 teams. Vanderbilt has started strong and appears to have what it takes to make a run deep in the postseason. South Carolina is chugging along and winning ballgames. Arkansas has struggled a bit, but they have also played a lot of guys, as Coach Van Horn has experiemented. Those three teams could all very easily be in Omaha in June. Mississippi, Kentucky, Tennessee, and Georgia are all very good teams lurking to make a run. This will be another fun year in the SEC. This weekend will be the last non-conference weekend series for the SEC teams. The Big 3 Illinois-Chicago @ Vanderbilt The Commodores are rolling right now, and they appear to be getting stronger. They ride the arm of David Price and the bat of Pedro Alvarez. This team has what it take to win the National Championship. Illinois-Chicago is a very good mid-major program, but Vanderbilt is building itself into a power. Coach Tim Corbin has built the Commodore program from the ground up. They have a new ballpark and a new commitment to winning. Vandy appears to be a lock into the College World Series this year. Prediction: Commodores sweep series Brown @ South Carolina Brown, from the Ivy League, will travel to Columbia this weekend to tangle with the Gamecocks. Brown will be overmatched in this series. South Carolina is a superior team in all aspects of the game, but they should take advantage of the situation and get some players some experience that they may need down the road. The Cocks will sweep this one without breaking a sweat. Prediction: South Carolina sweeps series Kansas @ Arkansas Arkansas has very high expecations this year. This is Dave Van Horn's most talented team at Arkansas. They have struggled a but thus far, but they have also played a lot of newcomers in tough games. Van Horn has taken this non-conference slate to build depth, and yes, it has caused Arkansas to lose some games. Dave Van Horn is a great coach so I will not question him at all. Look for the Hogs to bounce back strong with weekend against a very good Kansas club. Prediction: Arkansas sweeps series Other series to watch
