THE SEC THUS FAR
April 20, 2006

SCS.comIt is mid-April, and the SEC season is at its midway point. With fifteen games gone and fifteen more to go, this SEC season has been exciting, but a lot more excitement is yet to come. Some of preseason favorites have fallen on their faces, while others treaded water so they can make a second half run.

The Cinderella stories are also in the SEC mix at the halfway mark, and we have already drawn over one million fans at midseason. Last year the conference drew 1.49 million, and I am sure that we will break the 1.5 million fan goal set forth by the league. The SEC will get at least 8 NCAA bids again in 2006, and just maybe 9 or even a record 10.

The SEC also has National Championship contenders in South Carolina, Alabama, Vanderbilt, and Arkansas. Mississippi State rose to #1 in the polls, but the wheels have come off somewhat and they have me scratching my head since I once thought they were a National Championship contender.

The Florida Gators have been a complete flop and will not even make the SEC Tournament unless a second half miracle is in place. Cinderella Kentucky is over .500 in the conference at the midway point for the first time in over a decade. LSU has struggled over the first half of the season, but I have a feeling that they will be much improved over the last 15 games.

Series of the Week

Arkansas @ Mississippi State

A sweep either way distances the winning team from the pack. A MSU win puts the Dawgs back over .500 in league play. Arkansas must play better in the field if they expect to win. MSU must get solid pitching if they expect to win. They key matchup is the Bulldog bats vs Nick Schmidt on Friday night.
