SEC NOTEBOOK: SCRAMBLING FOR SEEDING
April 30, 2008
By Jimmy, SCS.com Staff Writer
With only three weeks left in SEC play, the conference tournament in Hoover is nearing. As of today, the seeding would see Georgia as the top seed, Mississippi as the 2 seed (due to their lead in the SEC West), Florida as the 3, Vandy as the 4, Tennessee as the 5, South Carolina with the 6, Kentucky with the 7, and Alabama with the final seed. We’ll take a look at each team along with Arkansas and LSU as the SEC Tournament....[MORE]
UGA-UF SERIES HEADLINES BASEBALL WEEKEND
April 25, 2008
By Jason, SCS.com Staff Writer
Last October saw the Georgia football team come onto the field after the Bulldogs scored the opening touchdown against Florida. Do not look for the UGA baseball team to run out on the field after they score their first run of the series this weekend in Gainesville (unless Gordon Beckham hits a homer or something like that). The #5 ranked and first place Bulldogs travel to McKethan Stadium to battle the Florida Gators....[MORE]
BECKHAM-LED DAWGS TEAM TO BEAT IN THE SEC
April 23, 2008
By Eddie, SCS.com Staff Writer
One of the hottest teams in the country right now is the Georgia Bulldogs. David Perno's squad has won 14 of their last 17 games, and while their 10-game conference win streak was snapped in Sunday's extra-innings tie against LSU, Georgia already had a sixth straight SEC series victory wrapped up. Thanks to their current run, the Bulldogs are 27-12-1 overall and 14-3-1 in the SEC, good for a 3.5 game lead over....[MORE]
SEC NOTEBOOK: SCOUTING THE TOURNEY FIELD
April 22, 2008
By Jimmy, SCS.com Staff Writer
With only four weeks of conference play remaining, the SEC Tournament is getting ever closer. As of now, the SEC East would get in each of their clubs with the West receiving only two bids. The locks for Hoover appear to be Georgia (14-3-1 SEC), who should get the top seed, Mississippi (10-8), who should win the West and therefore get the two seed, South Carolina (11-7), who is coming on strong, and Vanderbilt (10-7), a team....[MORE]
WEEKEND PREVIEW HIGHLIGHTS UM-FSU
April 18, 2008
By Jason, SCS.com Staff Writer
Everyone enjoys seeing David vs. Goliath matchups, rooting for the underdog, and a cinderella sporting the slipper in March. Well this weekend's match-up in Tallahassee is far from those three scenarios as the #1 Seminoles host the #2 Hurricanes. Dick Howser Stadium will be overflowing as the two go "mano y mano" to decide who is king of college baseball, well at least for the moment. Who will emerge....[MORE]
AN EARLY LOOK AT BASEBALL'S FIELD OF 64
April 16, 2008
By Eddie, SCS.com Staff Writer
With a little over a month remaining in the regular season, it's certainly not too early to start taking a look at who'll be celebrating on Memorial Day, when the field of 64 for the NCAA regionals is announced. There are a few surprising names among the field thus far, and there are also some surprising omissions as well. We'll start with the power conferences and work our way down. Right now, six ACC teams look good....[MORE]
SEC NOTEBOOK: THE MIDSEASON REPORT
April 15, 2008
By Jimmy, SCS.com Staff Writer
At the midpoint of SEC league play, the standings are beginning to take shape and the better teams are starting to separate themselves from the rest. As was pointed out in last week’s SEC notebook, the SEC East is the dominant division this year. Currently, five of the six teams on that side of the conference have winning records in conference play with the lone losing record belonging to Kentucky, who stands at 7-8....[MORE]
WEEKEND PREVIEW HIGHLIGHTS UCI-LBSU
April 11, 2008
By Jason, SCS.com Staff Writer
In the 1860's, Horace Greeley coined the phrase, "Go West Young Man!" SCS.com decided to take him up on his offer this week for our weekend college baseball preview. A big series in the Big West highlights the weekend on the diamond. The Anteaters travel to take on the Dirtbags of Long Beach State. Will the series be a highly competitive one or will there be a sweep? We will try and answer those questions and....[MORE]
DAWGS LOOKING TO TURN CORNER IN 2ND HALF
April 10, 2008
By Eddie, SCS.com Staff Writer
Last season, Mississippi State was expected to finish at the bottom of the SEC. Then Ron Polk's Bulldogs turned around and surprised everyone by contending for the SEC West title down to the last weekend of the regular season. However, the skid that they went on towards the end of the season might have been viewed as them coming back down to earth, but an unexpected regional win in Tallahassee and a super regional win....[MORE]
JAYHAWKS TOP STAFF'S FINAL HOOPS FAB 15
April 9, 2008
By SouthernCollegeSports.com Staff
College basketball's Final Four, arguably the best four teams throughout the season, top the final edition of the SCS.com Fab 15. National champion Kansas leads the way, followed by runner-up Memphis, then North Carolina and UCLA. Texas is number five, before Louisville, Tennessee, and Xavier follow. Stanford and Wisconsin round out the top ten. Three teams that were previously unranked - Davidson, Michigan State....[MORE]
SCS.COM STAFF SELECTS ALL-AMERICANS
April 9, 2008
By SouthernCollegeSports.com Staff
SCS.com’s First Team All-America squad ended up exactly the same as the Associated Press’ selection. That could mean we know what we’re doing here. Of course, that could also mean we have no creativity. Read into it however you’d like, but the real reason our first team was the same as the Associated Press’ is probably because there’s not much room for debate. Unlike the first team, SCS.com’s selections for Second Team....[MORE]
SEC STANDINGS TURNED UPSIDE DOWN
April 8, 2008
By Jimmy, SCS.com Staff Writer
As seems to happen often in this deep and talent-rich conference, the SEC standings are looking quite different than how preseason predictions saw them to be. The SEC East is looking stronger than the West this year, with four teams currently holding conference records over .500. Vanderbilt, a team that many thought could be the top club in the SEC, is currently in last place in the SEC East with a 5-6 conference record....[MORE]
NATIONAL TITLE PREVIEW: KANSAS / MEMPHIS
April 7, 2008
By Daniel, SCS.com Staff Writer
There might not be anything worse in sports than losing in the championship game. It’s something the Buffalo Bills, once losers of four straight Super Bowls, know all about. Five months of work during the season could go to waste for either Kansas or Memphis on Monday night. And five months of work could pay off on Monday for the winner. I’m about to analyze this game from top to bottom, but all you need to....[MORE]
BASEBALL PREVIEW HIGHLIGHTS TUSSEL AT FSU
April 4, 2008
By Jason, SCS.com Staff Writer
This week's matchup in the “Land of the Seminole” features #12 Virginia taking on #3 Florida State in a huge early-season ACC battle. The Cavaliers are looking to break out of the pack in the ACC, while the Seminoles will try to extend their lead in the league standings. Who will take the series this weekend at Dick Howser Stadium? Here’s a complete look inside that matchup as well as a number of other top series....[MORE]
A PREVIEW OF THIS WEEKEND'S FINAL FOUR
April 2, 2008
By Daniel, SCS.com Staff Writer
We all remember George Mason’s run to the Final Four two years ago. And we all remember how boring the 2006 Final Four was, too. So even though the nation rooted for Davidson to beat Kansas on Sunday to represent the little guys in college basketball, it’s probably better that the country now gets to see the top four teams battle for a national championship. There may not be any underdog stories in San Antonio this weekend....[MORE]
THE "NON-CHALKTASTIC" NIT FINAL FOUR
April 1, 2008
By David, SCS.com Staff Writer
Now that the dust has settled from the first two weekends of playoff basketball, the two college basketball tournaments are down to their final four teams. Unlike the NCAA Tournament, where all four top seeds won their regions for the first time ever, the NIT bracket had much more madness in the quarterfinal round. Top seeds Syracuse, Arizona State, and Virginia Tech all went down in order on their home courts....[MORE]
