LET THE GAMES BEGIN
September 1, 2004

The anticipation mounts as you watch your favorite baseball team wind its way through the dog days of summer. Another month and college football is here.

You guys know what I'm talking about. For us college gridiron junkies everything else is a cheap substitute. The days creep by and every day at least once the thought crosses your mind. USC vs Va Tech on August 28th. It is almost like being a kid looking forward to Christmas. We have jobs to go to, or school to attend. You may not know what you will be doing every night but you know exactly where you will be at 730pm on August 28th.

You may not care about, or may not like the two teams teeing it up but what does that matter? This is your season, and it is starting, and life is good.

As I watched the game unfold I couldn't help but think, this could be it for USC. This is one of those programs that thinks National Title, and you can't afford to slip up.

In the end they made the plays and they moved on. This is what makes our favorite sport unique, and the reason I do not support an NFL style playoff system. Another article for another day but in college football, every game counts. Rather your goal is the MNC (mythical national championship) a conference title, a bowl bid, or just a winning season.

Eleven or twelve games to prove yourself. The highs and lows, the rivalries, the pageantry. It just doesn't get any better than this. So lets settle in with the hope that this is our year, the year our team exceeds expectations and brings a little pride and swagger to our step.

With the closing of the Olympic Games, let THE games begin.

WAC predictions for the upcoming week:

Boise State over Idaho
Fresno State over Washington
Hawaii over Florida Atlantic
Louisiana Tech over Nevada
Houston over Rice
Stanford over San Jose State
Texas Tech over SMU
Kansas over Tulsa
Arizona State over UTEP
