THE WEEKEND'S BEST
Weekend of September 4, 2004

TOP QB

Alex Smith, Utah

Smith threw for over 350 yards and connected on nearly 75% of his passes as the Utes claimed a huge victory over Texas A&M to start the season.

Runner-Up: Sonny Cumbie, Texas Tech

TOP RB

Kay-Jay Harris, West Virginia

Harris set a Big East record with 337 yards rushing against East Carolina. Harris also scored four touchdowns as the Mountaineers started off the season 1-0.

Runner-Up: Vernand Morency, Oklahoma State

TOP WR

Jonathan Fields, Northwestern

Fields got off to a huge start in 2004 with over 200 receiving yards against TCU. He also hauled in three TD passes and averaged over 25 yards per catch.

Runner-Up: Airese Currie, Clemson

TOP TEAM

Washington State

The experts overlook the Cougars time and time again, but WSU just keeps on winning. A road victory over New Mexico should look impressive at season's end.

Runner-Up: Purdue

TOP GAME

Oregon State at LSU

The defending national champions drove down the field in the final minutes to score a TD and tying two-point conversion before winning the game on a missed extra point in overtime.

Runner-Up: Northwestern at TCU

TOP UPSET

Troy over Marshall

The Thundering Herd has lost some of its fright recently, while the Trojans look to be a front-runner in the Sun Belt this season.

Runner-Up: Florida Atlantic over Hawaii
