DAILY THOUGHTS AND RAMBLINGS
May 19, 2005

ACC

(12) Florida State visits NC State in game one Thursday evening. It's a huge weekend for Pack who is looking to stay alive in their quest for a NCAA regional hosting slot. (7) Georgia Tech and (10) North Carolina get together in the weekend's biggest ACC battle. The Jackets can clinch the regular season title with a win Thursday and a (4) Miami loss at Clemson. Speaking of the Hurricanes, they are just 1.5 games back of GT heading into the final week, while their opponent, the Clemson Tigers, is hoping to work their way into a regional host slot. Looking elsewhere, Virginia will play host to Duke this weekend. The on-the-bubble Cavs need an impressive weekend to keep their NCAA hoeps alive.

ATLANTIC SUN

The Troy Trojans have already clinched the league title and will visit 21-30 Jacksonville this weekend. Second place UCF will visit a Mercer team that is just 10-17 in league play. The Knights could help solidify their NCAA spot with a good weekend against the Bears. The league's third and fourth place teams get together during this final week of regular season play as Florida Atlantic and Georgia State go head-to-head. The Owls are a game better in the standings, but both are fighting for NCAA position. A good weekend by FAU could get the Owls on the inside of the NCAA bubble.

BIG EAST

St. John's could clinch the Big East title with a Thursday win at Villanova. The Wildcats' league tournament hopes are slim and would require a sweep of the Red Storm. Only two teams, Georgetown and Seton Hall, are out of the four-team conference tournament race. Pittsburgh, currently in third place, visits the Hoyas this weekend needing two wins to guarantee their appearance in Bridgewater next week. Only St. John's and Boston College hold out NCAA hopes at this point.

CONFERENCE USA

With the exception of seeding, there is little left to fight for in CUSA. With seven teams already locked in for next week's event in Hattiesburg, the Cincinnati/South Florida series in Tampa will finalize the league tournament field. The Bearcats must sweep the Bulls to earn the final slot. Meanwhile, TCU and (1) Tulane will butt heads in New Orleans this weekend to determine the CUSA regular season champ. The Green Wave needs just one win to secure the top seed. Tournament-host Southern Miss will visit Houston this weekend in the only other series involving two squads heading to next week's conference tournament. Tulane, TCU, and Southern Miss have all locked up NCAA bids, and East Carolina is on the verge of doing the same. A good weekend against 12-38 St. Louis should put the Pirates inside the bubble. Houston is 15-11 in league play but just 26-26 overall, while Louisville is 30-21 overall but just 13-13 in CUSA contests. Both are likely to find themselves on the outside looking in, though the Cougars could make a case with an impressive performance against USM this weekend.
