Week of December 13 - 19, 2004

GAME OF THE WEEK...

(11) Texas at (2) Wake Forest - Saturday

Two once-beaten teams get together early Saturday afternoon in Winston-Salem for an ACC / Big XII showdown. Wake Forest, ranked number one in the SCS.com Preseason Fab 15, lost to Illinois on the road two weeks ago. The Texas Longhorns' only loss, meanwhile, came during the first week of the season in Maui at the hands of the Iowa Hawkeyes.

Both teams have multiple players who score around a dozen points per game. Texas, in fact, has four players who average between 11.7 and 12.7 points each night out: Daniel Gibson, Brad Buckman, Jason Klotz, and Kenny Taylor. The Demon Deacons are led in scoring by Justin Gray. The guard averages nearly 17 points a contest and is followed by Eric Williams (15.4) and Chris Paul (12.3).

Since that early-season loss to Iowa, the Longhorns have rebounded to win four straight, the most impressive coming a week ago on the road at Seton Hall. The Deacons have played just once since their loss to the Illini and came away with a 17 point victory over Richmond.

The point guard matchup between Texas' Daniel Gibson and Wake's Chris Paul should be a fun one to watch. Another interesting matchup to watch will be the Longhorns' true freshman LaMarcus Aldridge going up against the Deacons' seasoned veteran Eric Williams down in the paint.

The Deacons still have much to prove after getting stomped by Illinois just two weeks ago. This should be a fabulous matchup for fans across the nation. Expect a close game with the home team coming out on top in the end.

THE WEEK'S OTHER TOP MATCHUPS...

(13) Kentucky at (6) Louisville - Saturday

In-state rivalries in college hoops don't get much bigger than this. The return of coach Rick Pitino to the state of Kentucky a few years ago added fuel to the fire. UL's Francisco Garcia is a national player of the year candidate and has this showcase game on his home court. Louisville has the more talented team this winter and will find themselves victorious over Tubby's Cats on Saturday.

(12) Arizona at Marquette - Saturday

The Golden Eagles picked up a huge win last Saturday, knocking off hated in-state rival Wisconsin in Milwaukee. Coach Tom Crean's team has yet to lose this season, but this weekend's game against Lute Olson's bunch will be their toughest test to date. The Cats are rolling, having picked up recent wins over Michigan, Mississippi State, and Utah and will continue their streak this weekend.

The Editor Says: Arizona

Oklahoma at Duke - Saturday

The Sooners, though a young and inexperienced team, have looked good so far this season. OU's only loss came against a talented Washington team, and that was by just five points. Victories over Big Ten opponents Minnesota and Purdue have aided in a 6-1 start to the season. Cameron Indoor is one of the toughest places in America to play. The young OU squad will learn that quickly.

The Editor Says: Duke

(4) Georgia Tech vs Gonzaga (Las Vegas, NV) - Saturday

Georgia Tech is coming off of a Final Four run just a year ago and has gotten things off to a good start this winter. Wins over the likes of Michigan, Georgia, and Air Force are nice, but none of those will compare to a victory over Gonzaga, the annual power in the West Coast Conference. Mark Few's team has already notched a home win over in-state rival Washington, but Tech gets it done in Vegas.

The Editor Says: Georgia Tech

NC State at (8) Washington - Sunday

Speaking of the Huskies, Nate Robinson & Co. will be hosting Julius Hodge's club out of the ACC. The Wolfpack is off to a 6-0 start, including victories over Purdue and Manhattan. And speaking of Hodge, the senior is scoring nearly 20 points a contest so far this season. Not to be out-done, UW's Robinson scores over 21 himself. In a fabulous Sunday showdown, look for the home team to come out victorious.
